Upon the Faerie Mound

YAY! Another original! I was at a Women's Sewing Circle at church yesterday, and you didn't have to just sew. You could bring whatever you wanted. Can you guess what I brought?

I was fishing through my old scans to find something to color when I came across this ancient sketch I made early this year. (Yes, that's ancient! CX) That gave me the idea that this would suffice to entertain me while there, but as I finished the lineart and began to color (actually, shade) I found I couldn't stop! LOL

The inspiration for the background came from the Celtic (that's pronounced "KEL-tick") Faerie faith of Faeries and their sacred Faerie mounds which were supposed to connect the human world to the land of the fair folk (which some believed to be across the Atlantic in what we now know as "America"). Even today, construction is sometimes stopped because of these mounds being on the construction site.

AND, yes, she IS a Faerie. She's a very rich Faerie, but a Faerie nonetheless. We Americans have warped the original idea of Faeries and turned them into little Tinker Bell pixies. The original idea of a Faerie was a tall, fair, beautiful, intelligent, and superior being in power that was all but a god. They were well versed in literature, war, science, the arts, and most of all, magic.

The general Faerie-human relationship was actually very peaceful, and they were serene creatures who didn't enjoy taking life, but were more than willing when their pride was injured or their possessions and knowledge was at stake.

Does any of this ring a bell to any of you InuYasha fans? Sesshomaru actually is almost a perfect illustratioin of a Celtic Faerie. Tall, brooding, beautiful, powerful- description fits him like a glove!
